VFFS or Pre-Made Pouch Filling: Which System Should You Choose?

How do rollstock film and pre-made pouches change the process?

Rollstock film must unwind, track, form, seal and cut correctly before a finished bag exists. A pre-made pouch must be separated, presented, opened and held before filling. Each process has different failure points and component tolerances.

Ask for production material from the intended converter. Laboratory samples may not represent curl, static, release, print-mark consistency or sealing behaviour across normal batches.

Which system is more flexible for pack presentation?

Pre-made pouches can provide converted features such as complex shapes, zippers or spouts, while VFFS can vary bag length and create defined bag styles from compatible rollstock. Flexibility depends on the actual pack family and changeover method.

List every required format and future pack separately. A system that handles one attractive sample may not handle the full portfolio without new tooling or a different process.

What should be tested before choosing either system?

Test product dosing, pack opening or forming, seal cleanliness, finished appearance, code position, discharge and the difficult start/stop conditions. Use the intended product, film or pouch and the actual closure features.

Record setup and consumable details so the result can be repeated. Include changeover to the widest or most different format where that range is part of the project.

How do product and seal contamination affect the decision?

Both systems need a clean closure area. Product dust, droplets, fibres or pieces can remain between film layers or pouch faces and create a weak or channelled seal.

The solution may involve dose cut-off, product-drop control, settling time, extraction, pouch cleaning or a different filling position. Increasing seal temperature alone does not remove contamination.
