Wrap-Around or Front-and-Back Labelling: Which System Fits the Container?

Direct answer: Use wrap-around labelling when one label must follow most or all of a substantially cylindrical surface; use front-and-back labelling when separate labels must be applied to defined panels or opposite faces. Container taper, stability, orientation, panel shape, label material and artwork position decide whether either method is reliable.
The machine applies the label presented to it, but the finished result is also controlled by the container surface and label construction. Production samples are essential where the pack has taper, ribs, seams, handles or variable moulding.

When is wrap-around labelling suitable?
Wrap-around labelling is suitable when the container can be rotated or rolled in a controlled way and the label can follow the application zone without excessive distortion. Straight-sided round containers are the clearest case, but every diameter and surface finish still needs confirmation.
Define label overlap or gap, seam orientation, application height and the relationship to moulded features. Test the lowest-friction and least-stable filled condition.
When are separate front and back labels preferable?
Separate front-and-back labels are preferable when the container has two presentation panels, when artwork must align independently on each side or when a single label cannot follow the whole surface. Reliable orientation is normally required.
Measure panel width, curvature, recesses, shoulder transitions and the position of handles or seams. Confirm the allowed relative offset between the two labels.
How do taper and panel shape affect label placement?
Taper changes the path followed by the upper and lower edges of a label, while curved or recessed panels change contact pressure and the order in which adhesive reaches the pack. These effects can create wrinkles, lifting or skew.
A label die shape or altered application zone may be more effective than machine adjustment alone. Trial the production label material and adhesive because stiffness and tack change how the label conforms.
What production label-roll details are needed for a trial?
Provide label dimensions, gap, liner width, core, roll diameter, winding direction, artwork orientation, material and adhesive. The roll should be produced to the intended production specification.
Include all label types in a front-and-back set and state whether they share a web or use separate reels. Record any code or inspection area that must remain visible.
