How Should Packaging Film and Pouches Be Specified?

Provide dimensions and tolerances, laminate or mono-material structure where verified, sealant layer and sealing window from the material supplier, thickness, friction behaviour, print repeat and registration mark, unwind direction, roll or pouch format, closure features, product contact condition and representative production samples.

The packaging material, machine settings and product form one sealing system. A machine can control jaw temperature, pressure and dwell within its design, but a stable seal also depends on the sealant surfaces meeting cleanly and the material remaining consistent through forming, filling and cooling.

What film or pouch data is required?

For rollstock, provide web width, roll diameter, core, unwind direction, thickness, structure, print repeat, registration mark and intended bag dimensions. For pre-made pouches, provide overall and opening dimensions, gusset, zipper, spout, tear feature, seal area and presentation method. In both cases, identify the product and storage condition.

The print repeat tells the machine where one printed pack ends and the next begins, while the registration mark provides a detectable reference for cut position. The mark must be consistent, sufficiently distinct from the surrounding print and placed where the sensor can see it without interference from artwork, joins or background variation.

Provide a print layout showing the mark, seal areas and intended cut line. If the material is unprinted during early trials, note that final registration still requires a production-equivalent printed roll. A splice or change in print density can produce a different signal and should be included in the operating and reject strategy.

Why do the sealing window and product contamination matter?

A material supplier's sealing window describes the conditions under which the sealant is intended to bond, but the usable machine setting also depends on jaw design, contact time, pressure, line speed, product temperature and cooling. Product in the seal area can interrupt contact or absorb heat, so the dosing and pack-forming sequence must keep the seal zone acceptably clear.

Powders can create dust, granules can become trapped and liquids can splash or wick. The trial should use the real product at its production condition and assess both normal running and starts after a pause. Seal acceptance must be defined by the pack owner using an appropriate test method; appearance alone may not demonstrate the required performance.

How do friction, curl and roll condition affect tracking?

Film friction and winding quality affect how the web unwinds, passes rollers and forms around a collar. Excessive slip, curl, telescoping, edge damage or inconsistent tension can cause registration movement, creases or unstable bag length. A pre-made pouch can similarly resist opening if surfaces block together or the mouth is distorted.

Store and condition trial material as intended for production, and identify whether roll direction, humidity or temperature changes behaviour. The machine should be evaluated with the likely maximum roll and at realistic accelerations, not only with a short hand-prepared length.

What film or pouch material should be supplied for a trial?

Supply enough production-equivalent material to set up the machine, run at stable conditions, test stops and restarts and retain samples. Include the final sealant construction, dimensions, print or registration mark, roll direction and all pouch features. If more than one supplier or construction is approved, each critical version should be identified and assessed.
