What is the difference between maximum speed and sustained acceptable output?

Maximum speed is the highest rate achieved under a stated condition; sustained acceptable output is the rate of conforming finished packs maintained during an agreed representative run. The two can differ because of product handling, feeding, operator replenishment, inspection, rejects and short stops.

A quotation should state which figure is being used and the assumptions behind it. Acceptance should identify the product, pack, loading method, test duration and quality checks so a short burst on easy samples is not compared with the production requirement.

How do changeovers and stops affect the required machine rate?

Changeovers and planned stops reduce the time available to make the batch, so the running rate may need to be higher than the simple shift average. The calculation should include realistic format changes, cleaning, product replenishment, film or label changes and planned quality checks.

Do not hide these tasks inside a broad efficiency allowance if they can be measured. A format matrix and production schedule make it easier to decide whether faster changeover, more automation, parallel work or a different batch sequence provides the better improvement.

Which machine sets the speed of an integrated line?

The line is constrained by the stage that cannot sustain the required flow under the current condition, but the bottleneck can move when the product, format or fault state changes. Feeders, filling, capping, labelling, inspection and manual packing can each become the constraint.

Map the process and define accumulation around sensitive stages. A faster upstream machine does not increase finished output if downstream demand is lower and there is no buffer or controlled stop logic.

How should mixed pack formats be included in the output requirement?

Specify output by format or format family rather than applying one number to every pack. Identify the normal, smallest, largest and most difficult formats, the proportion of production and the changeovers that materially alter tooling or handling.
